Ashley Moody would like to post a cop in front of her office only authorized to say “Move along. Nothing to see here.” But Floridians aren’t nearly brain damaged enough to believe that the Hope Florida scandal was just one of those messy government episodes where nobody really knew anything, and everybody somehow escaped responsibility. That story might be the Desantis/Moody mock outrage party line. Surely you’ve seen the clip of the would-be Dallas Cowboy cheerleader angrily erupting that “The only criminal activity is the disclosure of this illegal activity”. So, this is now the official Florida line. It’s what is most convenient for her. It is also insulting.
A grand jury found that $10 million in taxpayer money was misappropriated through Hope Florida as part of a scheme that ultimately benefited political activity. No criminal charges were filed, and Moody will no doubt cling to that fact like a life raft. But “not charged” is not the same thing as “cleared.” It does not erase the breathtaking failure of judgment, the contempt for basic accountability, or the stench of political loyalty that hangs over this entire affair.
Lest we not forget that Moody was not some bystander who wandered into the frame after the damage was done. The grand jury found that she knew about the plan to send the $10 million to Hope Florida and authorized her chief deputy to sign the settlement agreement. Concerns had already been raised about whether the money belonged to the state and whether the Legislature had to appropriate it. In other words, this was not some innocent oversight. The warning signs were there. They were visible. And Ashley Moody went ahead anyway.
That is what makes this so damning. It was not just incompetence, though there was plenty of that. It was the kind of political submission that has become far too common in Tallahassee. See the problem, understand the risk, know the public is being shortchanged and do it anyway because the people above you want it done. Moody did not behave like an independent statewide official. She behaved like a loyal functionary.
And then came the payoff in the oldest currency in politics: advancement. Ron DeSantis appointed her to the U.S. Senate in 2025. Maybe that was entirely unrelated. Maybe Floridians are supposed to believe that after all this, after Moody helped authorize a deeply suspect arrangement connected to an initiative championed by the governor’s orbit, her elevation was simply a happy coincidence. People can decide for themselves how gullible they want to be.
You do not have to prove a criminal conspiracy to recognize a rotten political culture when you see one. You do not have to use the phrase “quid pro quo” to understand what it looks like when a politician shows unwavering loyalty to power, helps carry out an indefensible mess, and then gets handed a promotion by the same machine. At some point, citizens are allowed to call that what it is: a system that rewards obedience and punishes integrity.
And what makes Moody especially unfit for the Senate is not just that she was part of this scandal. It is that she seems to embody everything wrong with the governing culture that produced it. No independence. No visible moral courage. No sign that protecting taxpayers ever came before protecting alliances. The money at the center of this scandal came from a Medicaid settlement, which means it should have been handled with extraordinary seriousness. Instead, it was shuffled through a politically connected charity under circumstances so outrageous that even without criminal charges, the whole episode reads like a case study in how public trust gets gutted.
A U.S. senator is supposed to have judgment. Ashley Moody showed none. A senator is supposed to serve the public before the governor who helped build her career. Ashley Moody has shown the opposite. A senator is supposed to be able to look power in the eye and say no. Ashley Moody, when it counted, looked up the chain and fell in line.
That is why she is unfit for the United States Senate. Not because every fact has been litigated to death. Not because a prosecutor signed an indictment. But because when Florida needed seriousness, honesty, and independence, Ashley Moody offered fealty, evasiveness, and failure.
Floridians deserve better than a senator whose clearest political talent appears to be knowing when to salute and reap the personal rewards.
